Remarks by President Roh Moo-hyun on crossing the Military Demarcation Line
Fellow citizens,
I am very excited today because I am going into North Korea for important tasks. Now that I am standing here, I have a mixed feeling. I cannot see any line, but this invisible line has separated the Korean people for the past half century, serving as a barrier between us. Owing to this barrier, our people have sustained undue suffering, and development of the nation has been slowed. Fortunately, we can cross this line thanks to many people’s efforts.
Now, I am walking across this forbidden line as the President. After my return from the North, many more people will be able to travel back and forth between the two Koreas. This forbidden line will then gradually fade out. The barrier between the South and North will eventually crumble one day. I will do my best to make my trip this time an occasion to break down the forbidden barrier, ease the suffering of the Korean people and pave the way for peace and prosperity.
Fellow Koreans, please join together in praying for the success of my trip.
