National Institute for Lifelong Education Launched

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--A government body to oversee and implement Korea’s lifelong learning policies was launched on February 15, 2008 under the name of the National Institute for Lifelong Education.

The establishment comes in line with the newly enacted Lifelong Education Act, revised in December 2007 so as to help Korea better prepare for social changes such as population ageing, globalization, decentralization and the expansion of a five-day workweek system. The revision sought to provide an institutional framework where local demands for development may be met through on-going learning activities.

The Institute integrates three national bodies that have been in separate operation so far, the Lifelong Education Center and Credit Bank Center under the Korea Education Development Institute, and the Individual Bachelor’s Degree Examination Department under the Korea National Open University.

By bringing the three functions under a single wing, the Institute is expected to ensure consistency and synergy effects in carrying out with policies such as building cities of lifelong learning and promoting adult literacy education.

In particular, the Institute will operate an integrated system for the accumulated management, evaluation and accreditation of individual learning outcomes, so-called the “Lifelong Learning Account System”. The Ministry seeks to give a boost to diversified formats of non-regular learning activities through the system, which will work in line with the existing credit bank system and individual bachelor’s degree system.

In addition, the Institute will serve a central function in implementing core policies laid out in the 2nd National Lifelong Education Promotion Plan(2008~2012), including the ministry’s goal to nurture creative learners across each stage of life.
