Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--On the theme of "Healthy Wetlands, Healthy People," the 10th meeting of member nations of the Ramsar Convention, the international treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of natural wetlands, will be held in Korea's Changwon, Gyeongsangnam-do, from Oct. 28 to Nov. 4.

During the eight-day convention period, the 158 Ramsar Convention member countries will discuss measures to protect wetlands and adopt conference resolutions and recommendations after reviewing 33 agendas related to wetland protection on Nov. 4.

Major agendas for the upcoming Ramsar Convention include Ramsar strategic plan 2009-2014, human health and wetlands interactions, climate change and wetlands, wetlands and biofuels and measures to counter highly pathogenic avian influenza.

At this year's meeting, the participants will adopt a "Changwon Declaration" and a resolution on the enhancement of biodiversity in rice fields as wetland systems. These two will be key to raising the international status of Korea as a home of wetlands.

The Changwon Declaration focuses on practical action to protect and wisely use wetlands. It also contains suggestions on how to protect wetlands in the world and present a future vision for the Ramsar Convention.

During the eight day program, Ramsar Convention member countries are likely to discuss benefits and demerits of the jointly suggested resolution by Korea and Japan on promoting global recognition of rice paddies as valuable wetland systems.

Korea's Minister of Environment Lee Maanee expressed his hope for the international environment gathering that this year's Ramsar Convention meeting will raise understanding of the importance of wetlands on human health in the world.
