STMicroelectronics Brings an LED-Lit Future Closer to Reality at ‘Strategies in Light’
National and international bodies such as the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the European Commission are backing LED lighting as the environmentally friendly replacement for inefficient incandescent bulbs to help meet the targets for greenhouse gas reduction worldwide. In addition, many countries around the world have already announced measures to phase out incandescent light bulbs for general lighting applications over the next few years.
Switching from incandescent lighting, which accounts for up to one-fifth of domestic electricity consumption, to compact-fluorescent (CFL) or LED retrofit bulbs could cut 15 million tons of CO2 emissions in Europe alone and reduce energy demand by the equivalent of 11 million households. According to EU estimates – assuming 20 lamps per household – homeowners could also save up to €50 per year. In addition, according to the EPA, LED bulbs qualified under the ENERGY STAR® program will use at least 75 percent less energy and last at least 15 times longer than an incandescent bulb, in addition to other advantages such as producing significantly less heat and providing precise placement of light.
Comparing the alternative replacements for incandescent lighting, although today’s LED lamps that use industry-standard fittings produce a lower total light output than a comparable CFL, they are improving quickly and should capture up to 80% of the total world market by 2020. Also, LEDs have key advantages for consumers: unlike CFLs, LEDs contain no mercury and have much longer lifetimes while producing a comparable quantity of light per Watt, in addition to providing instant light with no warm-up time necessary.
Chip companies like ST can help to speed the take-up of LED lighting by reducing the cost and increasing the reliability of the ICs used to control these LED lamps. ST is using the ‘Strategies In Light’ convention to reveal details of its own enhanced controller chip, called the HVLED805.
“Since the 1980s, ST has pioneered and led the market for electronic ballast control for fluorescent technologies,” said Pietro Menniti, Group VP and General Manager of the Industrial and Power Conversion Division at STMicroelectronics. “Now, leveraging its leading-edge expertise in power technologies and its deep knowledge of the lighting market, ST is now addressing LED lighting control. The new highly integrated HVLED805 controller provides the key to reducing component count, design complexity and costs for manufacturers, in addition to extending the effective lifetime of LED lamps.”
The HVLED805 operates directly from any AC mains voltage and uses ST’s proprietary high-voltage silicon process, which further increases overall reliability. Also, by reducing the number of components needed, the HVLED805 will enable future generations of lighting products to adopt smaller, innovative form factors.
