SEOUL--(Korea Newswire)--Mr. Jack Dangermond, the CEO of the Esri, a U.S. company that is at the vanguard of the global GIS industry, is considered to be the pioneer of GIS technology that enables us to build a smarter world and to utilize our resources more efficiently through the analytical management of all information that can be displayed on a map, and his upcoming visit to Korea is highly anticipated.

Comparable to Steve Jobs, the recently deceased founder of Apple, who is honored for his contributions to the transformation of the world through IT devices, Mr. Dangermond is considered to be a leader who continues to change the world through GIS technology.

Mr. Dangermond is scheduled to participate in the 7th Asia Pacific User Conference to be held at Ilsan KINTEX on November 15th and 16th and to be the keynote speaker for the conference.

In his keynote address on November 15th, CEO Jack Dangermond will present the vision and philosophy of Esri under the title “Understanding Our World,” examining the past and present utilizations of GIS technology and introducing the revolutionary global developments that we will encounter in the future as the potentials of GIS technology grow ever more powerful.

Mr. Dangermond founded the Esri company along with his wife in 1969 in Redlands, California, and in the 42 years since, the company has grown into the leader of the global GIS industry with 80% global user share for GIS software, sales of over 1 trillion Korean won, and a user base consisting of around 350,000 institutions and 1 million individuals.

Having launched himself into the field of GIS that had still been an unfamiliar terrain at the time of the company’s founding, Mr. Dangermond perceived the need for GIS software to analyze land usage maps, and released the ArcGIS software in the early 1980s. The great success of this software catapulted Esri into the vanguard position in the global GIS market.

Today, Esri has developed into the world’s largest company specializing in GIS software. ArcGIS is currently the iconic software that is the staple of the GIS industry and is supplied to GIS developers in over 90 countries including Korea.

In 2009, Forbes listed Mr. Dangermond as one of the top 400 richest people in the United States, and he has been valorized for his significant contributions to the overall development of the GIS industry, including his leadership in areas such as GIS methodology, GIS software market analysis, GIS technology research, and analytical methods related to GIS. In recognition of these achievements, he has been bestowed with honorary doctorates from many universities including his alma mater, California State Polytechnic University, and various medals and awards from organizations including the American Society of Landscape Architects and the Urban Information Systems Association.

Mr. Dangermond is currently also active as a consultant for various governmental and public institutions in the United States, includingthe National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA), the Environmental Protection Agency(EPA), the National Academy of Sciences(NAS), and the National Science Foundation (NSF).
