92% of Koreans support 2014 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games

PyeongChang--(뉴스와이어)--Koreans are all united in their desire for a successful bid by PyeongChang for the 2014 Winter Olympics, with a recent poll showing 92.3% support for a victorious outcome.

The latest research also found higher awareness and support for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games bid than during the bid for the 2010 Winter Games among residents of Gangwon Province, where PyeongChang is located; as well as PyeongChang itself and Gangneung, a nearby provincial city. The results demonstrate that expectations of Korea’s hosting the 2014 Olympics are high.

However, awareness of the bid campaign was not so high among the overall Korean public, suggesting that bolder efforts are needed in promoting the bid to strengthen nationwide enthusiasm and support.

The latest data were obtained from a preliminary poll held prior to an official national awareness survey of the 2014 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games, to be conducted from December 20 to 23. A report based on the latter survey will be included in the Mini Bid Book to be submitted to the IOC by February 1, 2006.

Korea Research, a professional firm, carried out the phone-based opinion poll of 2,130 Koreans from November 23 to 25, taking into account regional, gender and age demographics. Those surveyed were 703 Koreans from around the country, 709 residents of Gangwon Province and 718 residents of venue places where Olympic events will be held, including PyeongChang. The poll had a confidence level of 95%, and a sampling error of 3.7%.

The results are as follows:

① Support of bid for the 2014 PyeongChang Winter Olympics

- There is a strong support among Koreans: 92.3% national, 96.9% of Gangwon residents, and 97.3% of PyeongChang residents

- Upgrading Korea’s image was the most-cited reason (52.7%) for winning the bid, followed by encouraging balanced local development and stimulating the regional economy (29.6%), and promoting winter sports (10.1%).

- As a key advantage in winning the bid to host the Winter Olympics, Koreans as a whole (37.1%) and residents of Gangwon Province (23.8%) cited the successful hosting experiences of the 1988 Seoul Olympics and the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea-Japan. Residents of PyeongChang mentioned natural beauty and tourist sites (24%) as Korea’s key strength.

② Awareness of PyeongChang’s bid for the 2014 Winter Olympics

- Seven out of ten Koreans (69.7%), 95.6% of Gangwon residents, and 96.3% of PyeongChang residents were aware of PyeongChang’s bid for the 2014 Olympics.

③ Prospects and effects of hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics

- More than 80% of all respondents said that the 2014 Olympics would boost the status of Korea, increase people’s interest in winter sports, and bring positive effects to society.

- Most answered that it will have a positive effect on development near the venues (89.7% nationwide, 88.4% of Gangwon residents, 89.3% of PyeongChang residents).

④ Possibility to host a successful Olympics, if PyeongChang is awarded

- Around 95% answered that 2014 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games will be very successful.

- Three out of ten people (27.3%) expressed a willingness to volunteer for the 2014 Winter Games, while 45.5% of Gangwon and 58.7% of PyeongChang residents said they were willing to volunteer.

The results of this poll show a higher awareness and expectation for PyeongChang’s bid for 2014 Olympic Winter Games, following the bid for the 2010 Olympics. It also demonstrates the surge of national pride and brand image due to the 1988 Seoul Olympics and the 2002 FIFA World Cup, and the nation’s collective aspiration for national development through sports.

By comparison, support for the 2010 Winter Olympics was 86% among Koreans as a whole, 97% among residents of Gangwon Province, and 94% among PyeongChang residents.

Based on this poll, the 2014 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games Bid Committee plans to carry out varied promotional activities aimed at encouraging public participation and improving awareness.
