Winning designer selected for new Olympic-class ice rinks in Gangwon Province

PyeongChang--(뉴스와이어)--Gangwon provincial officials this week selected the firm to design two international-class ice rinks - one for figure skating and short-track speed skating and the other for ice hockey - to be built in two cities near PyeongChang.

The new ice rinks will provide attractive, state-of-the-art venues for an array of international competitions to be held in the future, including Olympic Games should PyeongChang succeed in its bid to host the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Judges selected three winning ice rink designs from a pool of seven completed submissions. Their evaluation was based on such factors as whether the design met IFs’ specifications, was athlete-friendly, and had strong potential for future re-use. The winning design company will be granted private contract rights for preliminary design work and project execution for the ice rinks, Gangwon officials said.

The rinks will be built in the cities of Wonju and Gangneung, each situated less than 45 minutes from PyeongChang by expressway. The cities are well-integrated into PyeongChang’s overall plan for hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics.

With the rink design contest wrapped up, officials said they will step up efforts to launch construction of the rinks, so they can be completed ahead of the important IOC on-site inspection and evaluation.

Moreover, PyeongChang bid officials are keen to promote these exciting architectural designs to the international community as part of their active bidding efforts.
