National Assembly committee focuses on supporting 2014 PyeongChang Winter Olympic bid

PyeongChang--(뉴스와이어)--Following the IOC’s selection of PyeongChang as one of the three Candidate Cities for the 2014 Winter Olympics, a Korean Parliamentary committee providing government-wide support for the Olympic bid geared up for its first field seminar on June 24 to 25.

An on-site inspection and study of Olympic competition sports venues and other facilities being readied for the 2014 Winter Games forms a key element of the committee’s first-round agenda.

The 15-person committee, headed by Jeong Deok Gu, counts among its members the bid chairman, Han Seung Soo; Gangwon Province Governor Kim Jin Sun, who also is president of the bid; the mayor of PyeongChang; and both Korean Olympic Committee and Culture and Tourism Ministry officials.

On the first day, the committee traveled to Olympic sport venues in and near PyeongChang. They've obtained up-to-date status reports from officials on the scene, on all projects in the design or development stage, along with those already completed.

The Jungbong downhill ski jump in Jeongseon, and the future Alpensia Resort, where the biathlon, cross-country and ski-jump competition venues will be built, are among the areas on the schedule. Resort facilities and lodging areas that are part of the PyeongChang 2014 bid blueprint will also be on their agenda.

Scheduled for the second day is a workshop aimed at devising measures by which the National Assembly can most effectively support the bid.

“Support from the National Assembly, such as providing the budget necessary to expand infrastructure for sports venues and to improve the road network, will be expanded and become the spark to build national enthusiasm for holding the 2014 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang,” said Gangwon Gov. Kim Jin Sun.

The governor added that he looked forward to the establishment of other national-level Olympic bid support committees.
