PyeongChang 2014 Unveils its Candidate City Emblem
A vision for PyeongChang’s Olympic ambitions, the emblem image portrays the abundance of nature - the mountains, the sun and the sea - in Gangwon Province, where the bid city is located. However, various components have particular meaning.
The five oriental brushstrokes flowing outward and away from a single point of origin illustrate PyeongChang’s aim of becoming the hub for winter sports in Asia and spreading the popularity of winter sports across the continent. Meanwhile, the freestyle design demonstrates the bid city’s passion in launching a new era for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
The colors of the strokes mirror those of the Olympic rings, which represent the five continents, and a desire for cooperation and harmony among the world’s people. In the case of PyeongChang 2014, those colors are imbued with special significance.
Yellow represents all of humankind; red symbolizes the sun and passion of Gangwon Province; blue stands for the East Sea, upon which Gangwon Province shares a long coastline; and green for the forested mountains and all living creatures on earth. An additional color, black, is included as an intermediary to bring all of the continents of the world into harmony.
The emblem will be used with a view to promoting Pyeongchang 2014’s passion for the Olympics until the final decision of the IOC in Guatemala City in July 2007.
