Korean Ultramarathoners Run ‘From Capital to Capital’ in Support of PyeongChang 2014 Winter Olympic bid
At 7 p.m. on Monday, a band of 30 runners took off from the nation’s capital of Seoul on a 94-kilometer race northeast toward Chuncheon, the capital of Gangwon Province, where PyeongChang is located.
About 15 hours later, by early Tuesday, the runners had completed the “capital to capital” ultramarathon, whose course followed the North Han River for much of its way.
At the finish line outside Gangwon Provincial Hall, volunteers from ‘Dongsamo,’ the winter sports club, greeted the endurance racers on Tuesday morning with a round of cheers and plenty of water.
The long-distance runners, joining up with other members of amateur ultramarathon groups, sent an original race banner to the PyeongChang 2014 Olympic Winter Games Bid Committee to express their hope and support for a successful Olympic bidding.
Kim Joo Yeong, president of the Korea Ultra Marathon Federation, said: “Throughout the course, I raced with all my heart out of my passion for the PyeongChang 2014 Winter Olympic bid.”
Note:
An ultramarathon refers to a race whose course is longer than a full-length marathon of 42.195 kilometers, but generally falls within the range of 100 km authorized by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). In Korea, the Korea Ultra Marathon Federation was established in 2000 and has 340 members.
