Cyclists Sharing Passion for PyeongChang by Pedaling Across 3 Provinces

PyeongChang--(뉴스와이어)--A group of PyeongChang 2014 Winter Olympic well-wishers is taking a unique - and challenging - approach to rallying for their Olympic bid candidate: They’re pedaling around the country this week.

Along their 350-kilometer trip, the cyclists are sharing their spirited feelings for the Winter Olympic bid city of PyeongChang with thousands of residents in cities, towns and villages along the route.

The 15-cyclist entourage includes residents of Wonju, the Gangwon province city that will be home to the PyeongChang Winter Olympic ice hockey venues. And spinning alongside them are members of Korea’s international winter sports fan club, ‘Dongsamo.’ (The club’s name is derived from the Korean meaning of three components: dong is Korean for “winter,” sa is short for sarang or “love” and mo is short for moim or “group”).

Together, these bicyclists will cover a distance of 235 kilometers over three days’ time, and travel through the countryside of three provinces. All the while, flags bearing the PyeongChang 2014 emblem will be waving in the breeze from their bicycles.

Though they face many challenges, the cyclists will have some help along the way as they surmount mountains, heat and fatigue en route: Dongsamo club members will form “host committees” in towns and cities along the route to encourage, cheer and rehydrate the pack.

After leaving from Wonju, the bicyclists’ route will take them to Chuncheon, the provincial capital, and several other cities including Chungju in North Chungcheon Province before concluding on August 21st in Wonju again.

One of the cyclists, Ham Hyun Kwan summed up the wishes of his co-participants by commenting that he looked forward to making friends not only with Koreans but people from all over the world in PyeongChang in 2014.
