Gangwon Forum Sparks Ideas to Power Along PyeongChang Fever
The more than 200 scholars, sports professionals and provincial leaders taking part in the forum stressed that PyeongChang fever will remain red-hot until the city is selected as Host City for the 2014 Winter Games in July 2007.
Jin-sun KIM, governor of Gangwon Province and PyeongChang 2014 executive president, said in opening remarks: “PyeongChang is positioned at the top of the three Candidate Cities in terms of citizen support. Alongside that, the backing from the central government, the National Assembly and other institutions is also very strong.”
Gov. KIM continued, “Once PyeongChang hosts the 2014 Winter Olympics, it will become an opportunity to expand winter sports across Asia and contribute to world peace, which will become our Olympic legacy. And further, the Winter Olympics will be accompanied by positive development, not only of PyeongChang but of all Gangwon Province.”
The Gangwon Sports Academic Institute, a body of scholars from area universities that hosted this year’s forum, also organized a panel discussion on Thursday to address two key issues of concern to the region: sustainable regional growth and nurturing youth athletics.
The 10-member panel included professors, lawmakers and sports educators from Gangwon Province, the mountainous region in the northeast part of Korea that is home to the 2014 Winter Olympic bid city of PyeongChang.
At the conclusion of the Forum, held in the provincial capital Chuncheon, attendees issued a formal statement: It read, in part: “If we are provided the opportunity to host the 2014 Winter Olympic Games at PyeongChang, our passion will be extended further to educational enterprise. And we will work together to support pan-citizen bid fever.”
