Championship Sporting Contests on Calendar for Gangneung - Venue City for PyeongChang 2014
The first is a national-class event dubbed the “Daegwallyeong Hill Climb,” where competitors will face off in bicycling and running events, competing as high as 830 meters above sea level. Organizers expect more than 5,000 spectators to watch this grueling endurance race.
Then, for one week beginning September 3, up to 500 athletes from 40 countries will compete in the 2006 Formula Windsurfing World Championship, this time in the ocean off Gangneung’s Gyeongpodae Beach. After being held in Europe, Australia, and the United States, among others, this is the first time an Asian city is hosting the windsurfing championship.
Gangneung, Gangwon Province, is planned to host ice skating and curling competitions as part of the PyeongChang 2014 Winter Olympics bid. And during the upcoming sports competitions, bid officials say there will be excellent opportunities to explain the PyeongChang 2014 Olympic concept to overseas guests, as well as for practical exchange among athletes and coaches from abroad.
PyeongChang has substantial experience hosting large international sporting events, and organizers predict smooth sailing during the two upcoming competitions.
Meanwhile, planning is under way for two major international sports competitions this winter: the Interski Congress from Jan. 27~Feb. 3, 2007, which will draw more than 1,000 skiers from around the world, and the 2007 FIS Snowboard World Cup in February.
