PyeongChang--(뉴스와이어)--A community in PyeongChang has established an independent foundation that will help foster athletes in winter sports disciplines. When launched later this year, Doam-myeon’s “2014 Dream Tree Scholarship Foundation” will provide financial support to such Korean athletes with the hope of fostering competitors for the 2014 Winter Olympics, for which PyeongChang is an official Candidate City.

To establish the foundation’s seed money, the citizens of Doam-myeon hosted events in June to attract potential sponsors, which include companies, academic institutes, and social organizations. The community is home to two of the main stages of a 2014 PyeongChang Winter Olympics - Yongpyong Resort and Alpensia Resort.

Their fundraising efforts have already yielded fruit: As of the end of August, Doam-myeon had raised 214 million won (US$221,000) for the scholarship fund. But with a target of collecting one billion won ($1.04 million) in seed money, community leaders say they shall continue their fundraising efforts through this year to achieve that goal.

Kim Sa Yun, director of the Dream Tree Scholarship Foundation, said, “We hope that PyeongChang will host the 2014 Winter Olympics, and we are contributing our full support to nurturing world-class athletes who can compete in the 2014 Winter Games.”
