Leaders of 5 Provincial Governments in Northeast Asia Pledge to Support PyeongChang 2014

PyeongChang--(뉴스와이어)--Provincial leaders from four East Asian countries who gathered in China with their Korean counterparts from Gangwon Province extended pledges to support PyeongChang in its campaign to host the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, according to the local daily Gangwon Ilbo.

This, the 11th such meeting among the Northeast Asian provincial leaders, was held September 1 in Changchung, the capital of Jilin Province in northeastern China.

The report said that J. Batjargal, chairman of the Tov Aymag Provincial Council of Mongolia, proposed that his home region extend hearty support to Gangwon Province and PyeongChang in their efforts to expand winter sports across Asia.

In addition, Wang Min, governor of China’s Jilin Province, proposed that Gangwon and Jilin provinces organize an exchange program on the occasion of Changchung’s hosting 2007 Asian Winter Games.

Participants said the meeting achieved its intended purpose of promoting cooperation among the five provincial governments in Korea, China, Japan, Mongolia and Russia. The regional officials also discussed other areas of mutual interest including tourism, education, agriculture, and cultural affairs.

Besides China’s Jilin, Korea’s Gangwon and Mongolia’s Tov Aymag provinces, representatives of Primorsky Krai, in Russia’s Far East, and Japan’s Tottori Prefecture also took part. Now in its 11th round, the provincial governments’ meetings are an initiative of Gangwon Province.
