Total Revamp for the 2014 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games
Within the new concept all Olympic stadiums and the two Olympic Villages will be centralized in the host cities PyeongChang and Gangneung within 30 minutes. The original plan located the stadiums in PyeongChang, Gangneung, Jeongseon, Hoengseong, and Wonju. These changes will improve the accessibility to the venues, will result in the athletes’ convenience and overall will increase security.
The new plan contemplates the two Ice Hockey stadiums, previously in Wonju, moved to Gangneung. The Half Pipe and SBX Snowboard stadiums are relocated to Bokwang Resort in PyeongChang from Hoengseong and the PGS event will take place at Yongpyeong Resort in PyeongChang. The Luge/Bobsleigh stadiums now at Hoengseong area will be moved to PyeongChang. The two Olympic Villages will be located in PyeongChang and Gangneung
The Gangwon Province administration decided on these changes considering the inconvenience caused by the decentralisation of stadiums and Olympic villages during the previous Winter Olympic Games, the assessment of PyeongChang by IOC Candidature Acceptance Working Group on June 22nd, and the international sports industry trend.
As well, the Executive Committee for the 2014 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games recommended the changes after serious discussions of its members, consisting of sports specialists and related organizations, the recommendations from six local sports federations, the Technical Committee of the Bid Committee and a professional group of the Dream Team preparing the bid file.
Governor Kim mentioned that the goal is to provide a convenient and secure venue for the 2014 Winter Games that truly reflect the Olympic spirit. The Candidature File, including the new plans, will be submitted to the IOC by January 10th, next year.
