Higher Standards Applied in Selecting Secondary Teachers

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--Undergraduate students general universities(other than teachers colleges) undertaking teacher education courses as a double major will be allowed extended opportunities to acquire a secondary teacher’s certificate starting 2008, according to the Ministry of Education & Human Resources Development on April 2, 2007.

Instead, those studying teacher education courses as a minor will no longer be given qualification for the teacher’s certificate. At the same time, the percentage of non-education major students at general universities who acquire the teacher’s certificate after completing a teacher education program will be reduced to 10 percent of the total freshman quota, down from the current 30 percent limit.

By obliging prospective secondary teachers to thoroughly complete courses in education, the new schemes is expected to help enhance the quality and capacity of teachers-to-be. The ministry also anticipates that the number of teacher’s certificate holders per year will drop by about 15 percent(5,400 persons), creating a better balance between the demand and supply of teachers.
