1,439 helpers to assist disabled college students

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--Physically disabled students at universities and junior colleges will all be provided with assistants upon request, to help them move around the campus, assist their teaching/learning activities, and provide books in Braille.

The Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development announced on April 12 that it will support over 2 billion Korea won for the asssitance program in 2007, to provide 1,439 helpers for the same number of disabled students at 128 colleges.

The support scheme first started with 390 helpers in 2005, increasing to 768 in 2006. This enabled assistance for up to degree-3 disabled students in four-year universities. In a further move, the ministry will extend eligibility to junior college students this year, regardless of the degree of disability.

In methodology, each applied college will recruit its own assistants from enrolled students. Selected helpers will earn 2 million won a year. The government will shoulder 70 percent of the total costs and the college will cover the other 30 percent.

The ministry expects that the move will help encourage physically challenged students to continue to higher education as well as help universities and colleges expand special admission for disabled students.
