School facilities improve for disabled students

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--A total of 25 billion Korean won from lottery funds will be invested in 2007 to upgrade and furnish facilities for disabled students at special classes within general pre-primary, primary and secondary schools, according to the Ministry of Education & Human Resources Development on May 11, 2007.

Special classes for the disabled were first built in general schools, aside from special schools for disabled students, in 2006. The ministry first supported accessibility aids and facilities for 200 schools that have special classes in 2006, and plans to extend support to 277 schools in 2007.

City/provincial offices of education will select recipient schools, taking into consideration the number of disable students and the degree of their disability. In general, priority will be given to pre-primary and primary schools. Selected schools will be granted 90 million won each, to cover the construction of elevators, slope sides, large parking spaces, accessible corridors and doors, toilets, etc. Self-evaluation will be conducted at schools in November to ensure that the grant has been effectively put to use.

The education ministry will draw budgets from the lottery fund, managed by the Prime Minister’s Commission on Lottery. The ministry’s plan is to build in complete facilities for the disabled in all 1,750 primary and secondary schools that operate special classes by 2009.
