School libraries see encouraging development
Hosted by the Ministry of Education & Human Resources Development and organized by the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education, this year's fifth exhibition drew over 10,000 interested principals, teachers, public librarians, civic groups, students and parents from across the nation.
At booths set up for each of the 16 metropolitan and provincial offices of education, participants were able to view best practices and various methods being implemented for efficient school library administration, and also share ideas for collaborated development such as programs linking with local public libraries.
Policy seminars were also held, where stakeholders and teachers discussed ways to help primary students frequent their use of libraries, and share experiences of improving secondary students’ reading and essay writing skills through the utilization of library resources.
Students and the public were also able to participate in hands-on experiences and special events such as storybook exhibitions, meeting with authors, and gathering used books to send to rural areas.
The exhibition was held in line with the education ministry's five-year plan to activate the utilization of school libraries. First introduced in 2003, the plan seeks to modernize 6,000 libraries by 2007, 65 percent of all primary and secondary school libraries nationwide. Library stocks will also be increased under the plan, leading to an average of 10 volumes per student by the end of this year.
As a result of the past four years of support, the average number of students borrowing books per day at a school grew from 41 students in 2002 to 53 in 2006. The number of library visitors grew from 75 students in 2002 to 116 in 2006. And over the four-year period, the overall rate of school library usage increased by 50 percent.
