Among the nine vehicles shown at GM Daewoo’s Bupyung facility in Incheon were the all-new Matiz, Korea’s favorite mini-car, the new Statesman large car, which goes on sale later this year, and its much-anticipated SUV, which will enter the market in 2006.
“The models on display represent in part the result of a major product offensive that has been under way since GM Daewoo’s formation two years ago,” said GM Daewoo President and CEO Nick Reilly. “They show the direction of our company over the next couple of years as well as the excellent progress that has been made in creating a broad range of new products in Korea that will meet the varying needs of local consumers.”
In addition to showing its new products, GM Daewoo also opened up its new advanced design facilities to the nation’s media for the first time ever.
“GM Daewoo has a full complement of world-class engineering and design capabilities,” said David Lyon, GM Daewoo and GM Asia Pacific Executive Director of Design. “This capability has not only benefited GM Daewoo, but has resulted in us becoming a key component of the General Motors global design organization. This combination is mutually beneficial giving us unmatched speed and resources for creating tomorrow’s cars and trucks.”
Last March, GM Daewoo announced KRW 1.74 trillion worth of new investments in Korea. Besides the development of a number of new vehicles and powertrains, the unprecedented investment plans also include the construction of several important new facilities.
“GM Daewoo is building its diesel engine plant in Gunsan. We also are moving forward on our plans to construct a test track and research and development facilities in the Incheon Free Economic Zone. According to Dr. Ki-joon Yu, GM Daewoo Auto & Technology Vice President of Product Engineering and GM Asia Pacific Engineering Project Leader, “By expanding our resources and capabilities, GM Daewoo has become an important vehicle development hub not just for GM Daewoo, but for the entire General Motors Group in Asia Pacific and around the world.”
GM Daewoo Auto & Technology, with headquarters in Incheon, Korea, was established in 2002. It has five manufacturing facilities in Korea as well as an assembly facility in Vietnam. GM Daewoo products also are assembled at GM facilities in China, Thailand, India and Colombia. In 2004, GM Daewoo sold more than 900,000 vehicles. Imported GM products from the Cadillac and Saab premium brands are sold in Korea through GM AutoWorld retailers.
