New teacher qualification test to focus on practical instructional capacity

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--Starting 2009, new teachers will be appointed through an intensive three-stage qualification system, according to an announcement by the Ministry of Education & Human Resources Development on October 1, 2007.

Teacher candidates will be required to first sit for a selection-based written test, then take an essay test, and finally have their practical class instruction ability assessed through an in-depth interview and demonstration test.

The change comes as an effort to improve the current qualification system, which requires only two stages of evaluation, with too much weight placed on a candidate’s rote memory. By revising the qualification system, the education ministry seeks to select teachers of excellence who possess adequate academic quality, good personality and a high level of professionalism.

In particular, the ministry intends to single out the most practically capable teachers for foreign language subjects. English teacher candidates must sit for an English listening test, while 2nd foreign language teacher candidates must write essays, attend interviews and conduct classes in demonstration, all in the respective foreign language.
