GM Daewoo’s domestic vehicle sales in December jumped 156.5 percent from sales of 5,705 vehicles in the same month of 2008. It was the fifth consecutive month of year-on-year sales growth.
“Our best domestic sales in three years were driven by strong demand for our next-generation mini, the Matiz Creative, and our new lower-medium sedan, the Lacetti Premiere. In December, the Lacetti Premiere recorded its best monthly sales performance in the second half of the year,” said Rick LaBelle, GM Daewoo Vice President of Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing.
“Domestic sales were also helped by the 2010 model year Tosca mid-size sedan and the 2010 model year Winstorm SUV, which both continued to perform well in their respective segments,” said LaBelle. “In addition, GM Daewoo profited from a series of aggressive sales incentives and promotions such as the Super Safe Warranty Program.”
GM Daewoo’s exports in December of 51,666 vehicles were up 49.3 percent compared from the same month in 2008. Exports of complete knockdown(CKD) kits of parts and components in December increased 23.8 percent year on year to 90,608 kits.
“Despite ongoing challenges in our overseas markets, we received a very encouraging sales rebound in December,” LaBelle added. “We benefited from the popularity of the Matiz Creative and the Lacetti Premiere in key export markets. We anticipate stronger sales in 2010 based on the positive market response to these products.”
For the year as a whole, GM Daewoo sold 114,846 complete vehicles in Korea and exported 463,912 complete vehicles worldwide. It also exported 958,033 CKD products.
The automaker’s total output was down 19.3 percent in 2009 compared with the previous year, when it sold domestically and shipped 1,904,987 units including CKD products.
GM Daewoo’s domestic sales in 2009 were down 1.4 percent to 114,846 vehicles from 116,519 vehicles in 2008. Exports of complete vehicles in 2009 decreased 39.4 percent to 463,912 vehicles from 765,440 vehicles in 2008. Sales were negatively impacted by the global economic downturn.
True to its name the Lacetti Premiere was a global bright spot, with domestic sales jumping 395.5 percent from 2008 to 44,464 vehicles in 2009.
The introduction of the Lacetti Premiere 2.0-liter turbo-diesel sedan in February and the Lacetti Premiere ID model in October strengthened GM Daewoo’s compact car lineup. The Lacetti Premiere posted the best annual domestic compact car sales since the company’s founding in 2002.
”Supported by our stronger, more comprehensive nationwide network of retailers, we anticipate growing sales momentum at the beginning of 2010,” according to LaBelle. “While we expect vehicle sales at home and abroad to remain steady in 2010, we will remain aggressive. We will again respond to consumer demand for new products by introducing a competitive upper-medium sedan in the second half of the year.”
