Patrick Popp Named Managing Director of GM Uzbekistan
Patrick, who will be based at GM Uzbekistan, will have oversight responsibility for GM activities in Asaka assembly operation as well as the Tashkent Powertrain facility. Patrick will report to Mike Arcamone, President and CEO of GM Daewoo and join the GM Uzbekistan Board of Directors.
“Uzbekistan will play an ongoing and very important role in GM’s future in Central Asia. We are delighted to have Patrick taking a very important role in GM Uzbekistan,” said GM Daewoo President and CEO Mike Arcamone.
He added, “Patrick will work to optimize growth and opportunity for GM and our GM Uzbekistan and GM Powertrain Uzbekistan partners.”
Patrick, who joined General Motors in 2003, currently serves as GM Daewoo’s leader of Electric Engineering Function in Korea. Before this assignment, he was a director of Global Electrical, Electronics, Software System Engineering in the Asia Pacific region from 2008. He also served as a director of Global Body, Safety, convenience & Security Electronics from 2006 to 2008 and director of Advanced Technical Work Safety Innovation from 2004 to 2006.
Before joining GM, he worked as an engineer at European Center for Advanced Science Computing in France and BMW in the U.S. and Germany.
Patrick was born in Wiesbaden, Germany. He received a Master’s degree of Science Equivalent, Mechanical Engineering from Darmstadt Institute of Technology in Germany in 1992. He received a Master’s degree of Science, Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University in 1993 and a doctorate degree of Computer Science from Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse and Ecole Centrale de Paris in 1996.

GM Uzbekistan (GMUZ) is a joint venture between General Motors and UzAvtoSanoat that is based in Asaka, Uzbekistan. The vehicle manufacturer was established in March 2008. GM holds a 25 percent stake and UzAvtoSanoat the remaining 75 percent. GM Uzbekistan has an annual production capacity of 250,000 units. It currently builds the Captiva and Epica at its facility in Tashkent and the Lacetti, Nexia, Matiz, Spark and Damas at its facility in Asaka. Its vehicles are sold under the Chevrolet badge in Uzbekistan via GMUZ’s sales operations and exported under the Daewoo brand (except the Captiva and Epica) to numerous neighboring countries. GM Uzbekistan employs more than 6,385 people.
GM Powertrain Uzbekistan is a joint venture between GM and UzAvtoSanoat. GM holds a 52 percent stake. Construction began in December 2008, with production scheduled to commence in November 2011. GM Powertrain Uzbekistan will manufacture 1.2-liter and 1.5-liter gasoline engines, predominantly for the Uzbekistan market, with the balance for export. It will have a maximum capacity of 360,000 units per year. The capacity of the plant will initially be matched to demand from GM Uzbekistan. GM Powertrain Uzbekistan is expected to create 1,200 additional jobs.
