GM Daewoo Collaborates with Suppliers on Product Quality to Ensure Zero Defects
The automaker invited representatives from several of its domestic suppliers to visit its Incheon headquarters today for a meeting with corporate and core product development and quality executives. GM Daewoo President and CEO Mike Arcamone, GM Daewoo Technical Center Vice President Sohn Dong-youn, GM Daewoo Quality Vice President James DeLuca, and GM Daewoo Purchasing Vice President M. Venkatram provided a business update and discussed GM Daewoo’s quality goals as well as new market opportunities.
Arcamone explained GM Daewoo’s corporate situation and its improved purchasing processes, which includes simplified collaboration procedures, estimates and forms to ensure the highest level of quality.
Arcamone also encouraged suppliers to explore opportunities in global markets, including the emerging markets of Eastern Europe, which are expected to experience high growth. As an example, he used Uzbekistan, where GM Daewoo sold 99,000 vehicles in 2005 and expects to sell 227,000 in 2010 – representing growth of 126 percent over five years.
“Securing the highest-quality parts is essential for the continued success of both GM Daewoo and our suppliers. GM Daewoo will maintain an open dialogue with our suppliers for long-term mutual growth as we seek new opportunities beyond Korea’s borders,” said Arcamone.
“The strong competitiveness of our suppliers has made GM Daewoo a more competitive global automaker in terms of quality overall. We look forward to working with our domestic suppliers to build on our record of success,” he added.
Domestic companies are playing a growing role in GM Daewoo and GM’s global supplier networks. Of GM’s 76 Suppliers of the Year for 2010, 17 (or 22 percent) are from Korea. Local auto parts companies delivered KRW 5.9 trillion and US$1 billion worth of parts and components to GM Daewoo and GM, respectively, in 2009. This is double the amount delivered in 2003.
GM Daewoo Auto & Technology was established on October 17, 2002. It has five manufacturing facilities in Korea as well as an assembly facility in Vietnam. In addition, GM Daewoo provides market and brand-specific vehicle kits for assembly at GM facilities in China, Thailand, India, Colombia and Venezuela. In 2009, GM Daewoo sold in Korea and exported more than 1.5 million units, including CKD products. GM Daewoo now produces vehicles and kits that are offered in more than 150 markets on six continents.
