GM Daewoo Labor and Management Sign Agreement on 2010 Wage and CBA Negotiations
The final definitive agreement was signed by GM Daewoo President and CEO Mike Arcamone and Young-Ho Choo, Chairman of GM Daewoo’s labor union.
“The successful results, which were achieved without a work stoppage, were due to proactive communication and constructive negotiations based on mutual trust between the company and its labor union,” said Arcamone. “I’m very proud of our labor union members, who accepted their responsibility and never side-stepped hard decisions.”
He added, “The union members’ decision based on mutual understanding between the company and the labor union has ensured that GM Daewoo will maintain its manufacturing competitiveness in the global marketplace. It provides our company a strong foundation for a bright future.”
“I sincerely thank all union members who approved the tentative agreements from a broader viewpoint.” said Mr. Choo. “It is certainly more important for the company and its labor union actually to bring agreement in action than today’s singing. In doing so, trust, mutual understanding and respect can be achieved,” he emphasized. “The labor union will try its best to maintain union members’ job security and welfare by seeking various ways to increase domestic sales.”
The wage and CBA agreement includes a monthly base wage increase of KRW 74,359, an incentive of KRW 2.5 million upon ratification of the agreement and KRW 2 million in performance pay to be provided at the end of the year. It was provisionally completed on July 22 after 20 rounds of negotiations, and was ratified after receiving the support of 59.7 percent of union members who voted on July 23 and 26.
