GM Daewoo's New Program “Bureaucracy Busting” Changes Company

서울--(뉴스와이어)--In an effort to work smarter, better and faster, GM Daewoo Auto and Technology (GM Daewoo) launched a program, called “Bureaucracy Busting” 60 days ago that today is changing the shape of the work place and the minds of its workers.

“Our aim is to completely eliminate non-value added work,” said Mike Arcamone, President and CEO, GM Daewoo. “We don't need people needlessly preparing unnecessary reports to update an executive or because it is the way we have always done things. GM Daewoo needs employees to focus on what really matters like solving problems, planning for the future and out-thinking the competition. By abolishing bureaucracy, we are working far more efficiently and effectively than we have in the past. We are changing and GM Daewoo needs to change to remain competitive and successful.”

GM Daewoo's most recent change, as part of its Bureaucracy Busting program is expanding the workspace for its employees by reducing the size of its executives’ offices.

“The purpose of the renovation is to provide more space, which used to be provided to executives, for employees,” said Chris Taylor, Vice President of GM Daewoo Human Resources and Change Management. "“The renovation will not only enable team members who had worked separately - or were dispersed to different parts of the headquarters buildings - to work together, as one team, in the same space, it will also create more conference rooms and recreation areas for them. This will ensure a better working environment for all employees.”

The office of GM Daewoo President and CEO Mike Arcamone is no exception. Following the summer holidays in early August, the office had been reduced to half its previous size.

Arcamone launched the “Bureaucracy Buster” program in May to create a working environment that is more innovative and effective by eliminating bureaucracy. Both hourly and salaried employees are encouraged to identify bureaucratic processes and offer solutions for eliminating them. This information is sent to the company’s “Ask the CEO” intranet website. Each month, Arcamone chooses the best idea. The employee with the winning suggestion is given KRW 500,000 worth of gift certificates. Three “Bureaucracy Busters” have already been chosen.

Since instituting the “Bureaucracy Buster” program, GM Daewoo has also cut senior leadership meeting times in half by limiting presentations to a maximum of 10 slides. “Employees are embracing this program and there is a lot of excitement about it at all levels of the company because people are witnessing real change,” said Taylor, “People - especially senior executives - are proactively asking me to make their offices smaller to increase the work space for their teams. Everyone is eager and enthused to take part in a program that is producing tangible results.”
