GM Daewoo Introduces Alpheon, First-Ever Luxury Upper-Midsize Sedan
“As GM Daewoo’s initial entry in the fast-growing upper-midsize segment in Korea, the new Alpheon marks the beginning of a new era for our product portfolio,” said Mike Arcamone, President and CEO of GM Daewoo. “Our new luxury sedan will take our product and corporate image to a higher level and help us increase our domestic market share.”
The Alpheon is sharing its architecture with the Buick LaCrosse, sold in North America and China. Working with GM’s design and engineering teams from Asia, Europe and North America, GM Daewoo has tailored the vehicle to exceed the demands of the most sophisticated luxury car buyers in Korea.
Sculpted Exterior Design
At first glance, its best-in-segment overall length of 4,995 mm and overall width of 1,860 mm give the Alpheon the presence of a large premium sedan.
The sculpted hood with portholes complements the fender-swept high-intensity discharge headlamps and a flowing side line that continues along the entire length of the car to the rear. With a newly designed emblem on its front “waterfall” radiator grille, the Alpheon represents a stand-alone luxury product brand in GM Daewoo’s product portfolio.
The Alpheon’s high beltline, which connects to its steeply raked windshield, also gives it more substantial proportions and a true coupe-like profile. At the rear, the vehicle is highlighted by LED tail lamps and dual twin exhaust pipes integrated into the rear bumper.
Elegant Interior and Intelligent Technologies
The Alpheon’s interior echoes its standout exterior design elements. The flowing lines of its instrument panel design offer a distinct, confident and upscale impression.
The upscale interior includes real leather seats, a 12-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, ocean-blue ambient lighting, a premium audio system with speed-compensated volume control and audio-controller in the back seat, an 8-inch navigation screen, and a power-adjustable rear window shade.
Tri-zone air-conditioning enables three different temperature settings for the driver, front passenger and passengers in back. The electric park brake integrated into the center console requires the mere push of a button to brake for parking and adds elegance to the interior. These features and the auto-forward lighting system, which has headlamps that turn in the direction that the steering wheel turns, are segment firsts in Korea.
Powerful, Responsive Performance
The Alpheon is powered by a 3.0-liter V-6 SIDI engine that generates maximum power of 263 ps at 6,900 rpm and maximum torque of 29.6 kg.m at 5,600 rpm.
In the sophisticated V-6, fuel is directly injected into the combustion chamber, producing a high compression ratio and increasing both efficiency and horsepower. Variable valve timing on both the inlet and exhaust, and dual continuous variable cam phasing with optimal timing on both the intake and exhaust valves further improve fuel efficiency and lower emissions.
The efficient direct injection engine is mated with an electronically controlled six-speed automatic transmission that optimizes fuel economy and minimizes noise, vibration and harshness.
Quiet Ride and Precise Handling
The Alpheon’s solid body structure serves as a strong foundation for precise suspension tuning, safety and a quiet ride. More than 70 percent of its body is constructed of high-strength steel. The sturdy underbody structure design with sound-deadening materials offers tight handling characteristics that enhance the standard-setting suppression of noise, vibration and harshness.
The Alpheon is also equipped with an array of technically advanced chassis control systems including Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), the four-wheel Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) and the Traction Control System (TCS), allowing it to sense the slipping of the wheels and prevent the vehicle from sliding. Standard four-wheel disc brakes provide improved braking and pedal feel, further maximizing control of the upgraded chassis system.
Among the Alpheon’s standard safety features are six standard air bags, including front-, side- and roof-mounted head curtain air bags.
Pricing
The all-new Alpheon luxury upper-midsize sedan with a 3.0-liter engine comes in two trim levels, which are priced at KRW 36.6 million for the CL300(Deluxe) and KRW 38.9 million for the EL300(Supreme).
