GM Korea Introduces All-New Segment to Market: Active Life Vehicle – Chevrolet Orlando
The Orlando is Korea’s first ALV. Its design – part MPV, part crossover – breaks the rules of a historically conservative segment; it makes a statement and stands out from the crowd. It is the perfect vehicle for today’s modern family and combines fun, entertainment and relaxation all in a single package.
“We are carving out a new segment in the market with the Orlando,” said Mike Arcamone, President and CEO of GM Korea. “The Orlando not only brings great value for money to modern families on the move, but also brings something fresh to the domestic market – a certain function with attitude, as we put it.”
Arcamone added, “The new Orlando ALV will draw people to the Chevrolet brand. It has a key strategic role to play in Chevrolet’s aggressive product offensive in Korea as we kick off an ambitious eight-product launch program that will span the next nine months.”
The product name, Orlando, also conveys the family-oriented character of the vehicle by creating a connection to a popular family destination in the U.S. state of Florida.
Bold crossover styling that is distinctly Chevrolet
Chevrolet's new ALV has a bold look, with its low roofline and crossover-inspired silhouette, while retaining the distinctive and recognizable Chevrolet “face” depicted by the split radiator grille and bow-tie badge.
The distinctly recognizable Chevrolet face is complemented by headlamps with piano black surrounding bezels and chrome parabolas, a profile characterized by the low swept roofline and the muscular, protruding wheel arches that house 16-, 17- or 18-inch wheels.
At the rear, the Orlando has a number of features that showcase Chevrolet's new design language, including rear taillamps that have evolved from split function lamps. The center-mounted back-up lamp, which sits in the rear bumper, is unique to the Orlando.
Functionality, 7-seater versatility and ample space
While the exterior of the new Chevrolet Orlando is sure to attract plenty of attention, the interior, too, features many of the latest design cues from Chevrolet such as a Corvette-inspired dual cockpit and ambient blue backlighting in the center console.
Distinctive design is nothing without well-thought-out functionality. The “theater-style” seating arrangement of three rows of seats, the generous load area and the numerous storage solutions will also grab the attention of family motorists.
The interior seating is referred to as “theater-style” because in spite of the sweeping roofline, designers have succeeded in raising the second and third rows. This allows the Orlando's occupants to get an even better view both ahead and to the sides without compromising headroom.
Numerous seating configurations are possible with either the second or third rows folded independently or together to make a completely flat load area. The second seat row also has a tumble-fold facility for both the left- and right-hand outer seats to allow easy access for passengers into and out of the third row.
The Orlando's load area is among the largest in the segment, with 1,594 liters available when both rows of seats are folded.
Plenty of storage space is also available for all the bits and pieces that collect inside. The Orlando has a range of compartments of different shapes and sizes and in different locations, including a coin holder and two large cup holders in the center console, map and bottle holders integrated into the front and rear doors, and a number of individual compartments in the cargo area.
However, perhaps the most ingenious storage area is hidden behind the front fascia of the audio system and within easy reach of both the driver and front-seat passenger. Designers have integrated a usefully large area, which was seen originally in the Orlando concept car. It is revealed by flipping up the face of the audio system. It is large enough to accommodate such items as an MP3 player, sunglasses and wallets.
More powerful, fuel-efficient diesel engine
The Chevrolet Orlando is powered by a 16-valve, four-cylinder 2.0-liter DOHC diesel engine, which is matched with both advanced six-speed automatic and manual transmissions. The diesel engine with a variable geometry turbocharger generates maximum power of 163 ps at 3,800 rpm, while maximum torque is 36.7 kg.m at 1,750-2,750 rpm. The Orlando's advanced common rail injection system has customer-pleasing fuel economy (M/T 17.4 km/ℓ and A/T 14.0 km/ℓ). As a result of its low emissions, it fully meets the stringent Euro V emission standard.
Refinements to the intake system include a “variable swirl” intake fold that improves performance. The diesel engine combined with the advanced six-speed automatic transmission demonstrates great mid-range thrust, as the official performance figures confirm.
Segment-leading ride and handling with world-class safety
The Orlando used the highly acclaimed Chevrolet Cruze sedan as its base. Like the Cruze, the Orlando has accomplished handling. At its heart is a body frame integral (BFI) structure that is among the stiffest in the compact van segment and offers the benefits of a sedan.
Occupant safety is of paramount importance in GM’s global product development strategy. Orlando owners will be reassured by both the attention to detail and the inclusion of the latest safety technology.
Most of the Orlando's body structure is constructed of high-strength steel (71 percent) to form an effective passenger safety cage that provides protection in the event of a collision to the front, rear or side of the car. Should a collision occur, occupants will be protected by six air bags – twin front, side and optional curtain. The side air bags are fitted to the outer sides of the driver and passenger seats and provide protection for the pelvis and thorax in the event of a side impact.
The Orlando has a comprehensive list of safety features. Crash Sensor Technology (CCS) ensures that the doors unlock automatically upon detection of an impact. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) incorporates the Electronic Brake Force Distribution System (EBFDS), Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS), Engine Drag Control (EDC) and Traction Control System (TCS). This enables it to sense slipping of the wheels and prevent the vehicle from sliding. The Orlando’s stopping power under emergency braking is further enhanced with Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA).
The all-new Chevrolet Orlando comes in three trim levels, which are priced from KRW 19 million for the LS to KRW 24 million for the LTX.
