GM’s Chevrolet Camaro Roars into Korea

SEOUL--(뉴스와이어)--The wait is over. The Chevrolet Camaro – the iconic American muscle car and heroic Bumblebee who saved the world in the Hollywood blockbuster “Transformers” – is finally coming to Korea.

GM Korea today unveiled the 2011 Chevrolet Camaro at Chevrolet Town in the heart of Seoul, its third vehicle introduction in the past eight days. GM Korea has started taking orders for the new Camaro, with deliveries to customers scheduled to begin in late March.

“The Camaro is the perfect example of the exciting vehicles that Chevrolet is bringing to Korea,” said Mike Arcamone, President and CEO of GM Korea. “With its dazzling looks, exhilarating performance and cutting-edge technology, the Camaro is sure to attract enthusiasts young and old, and help our new Chevrolet brand touch Korean consumers in a stunning way.”

Built on GM’s new global rear-wheel-drive passenger car platform, the Camaro embodies GM’s global vehicle development and design process. The original design concept was conceived in the United States, with engineering shared by both Australian and U.S. teams. The Camaro was validated on roads around the world, with assembly at GM’s award-winning plant in Oshawa, Canada.

Eye-catching exterior

It’s hard not to be swept away at the very first glance of the new Camaro. The new-generation Camaro design has garnered many prestigious accolades, including the 2010 World Car Design of the Year and Hottest Car of the 2010 SEMA Show.

The design of the new Camaro acknowledges its rich past that goes back to 1967, without being trapped in a “retro” focus. The two-door sports coupe features classic proportions over a 2,850-mm wheelbase.

The long hood and short deck are pushed to the far corners of the muscular fender forms and a fast, 67-degree raked windshield contributes to aerodynamic performance with a 0.37 coefficient of drag.

Wheel arch openings received special attention throughout the design process. Whether the Camaro is equipped with the standard 19-inch wheels, the relationship of the top of the tire and bottom of the fender is consistent.

Interior details

The Camaro’s four-passenger cabin is a well-executed balance of heritage, modern design and attention to detail.

Deep, recessed gauges located in square housings give a nod to the classic Camaro interior. The instrument panel gauges include both a speedometer and engine rpm, with a driver information center located between the large gauges – its readouts and features controlled via a stalk on the steering column. The console-mounted gauge package includes oil pressure, oil temperature, voltage and transmission fluid temperature.

The advanced Head-Up Display projects vehicle speed and other data onto the windshield for easy, at-a-glance viewing that don’t require the driver to take his or her eyes off the road.

The interior includes:

·Heated, leather-trimmed seats with driver six-way power adjustment
·A three-spoke steering wheel with manual tilt/telescope adjustment
·Cruise control
·Rear park assist
·A rear defogger
·Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port and an iPod interface
·A premium 245-watt Boston Acoustics nine-speaker audio system

High-performance powertrain, chassis and suspension

The Camaro’s 3.6-liter direct injection V-6 engine delivers more power through increased efficiency, while maintaining fuel economy and lowering emissions. It produces 312 ps at 6,400 rpm and 38.4 kg.m at 5,200 rpm.

The engine is matched with the Hydra-Matic 6L50 six-speed automatic transmission, which includes a driver shift control via paddle shifts located on the steering wheel. It features aggressive first gear ratio that delivers strong launches, but also provides tall overdrive ratio that decreases engine rpm and provides better fuel efficiency.

In addition to the powertrain, the chassis and suspension are also key to the Camaro’s sporty performance. It features fully independent front and rear suspensions, with the standard independent suspension using a 4.5-link system that includes a unique, L-shaped upper control arm that attaches to the knuckle at one end and incorporates a ride bushing in the rear.

The FE2 sport suspension package is offered on the Camaro. The front suspension has a dual ball strut system, with a direct-acting stabilizer bar. Rear suspension features include high lateral stiffness for handling via three lateral ball joints per side. A sub-frame at the rear is double-isolated to minimize vehicle body motions and dampen road imperfections. Coil-over shock absorbers are used in the rear with a decoupled, hollow stabilizer bar.

Additional chassis and suspension details include four-wheel disc brakes, a precise rack-and-pinion steering system with a 16.1:1 ratio and StabiliTrak electronic stability control.

Comprehensive safety features

The Camaro offers a comprehensive array of safety features – starting with a robust body structure and integral safety cage around the passenger compartment. High-strength steel and ultra high-strength steel are used in key areas throughout the structure. Safety technologies also include:

·Driver and front passenger dual-stage air bags
·Driver and front passenger seat-mounted thorax side-impact air bags
·Head curtain side-impact air bags for front- and rear-seat occupants
·Front-seat safety belt load limiters and pretensioners
·A front passenger detection system that senses children and small-stature adults, and suppresses air bag deployment when appropriate

In both doors, an interlock pin is used to help prevent intrusion into the passenger compartment by adding stiffness to the door structure.

Pricing

The Camaro with a six-speed automatic transmission comes in two trim levels, which are priced from at KRW 47 million for the fully loaded version, and KRW 48 million for the special bumblebee package.
