GM Daewoo’s new large car and flagship model in Korea is based on the long-wheelbase Statesman from GM’s Holden unit in Australia. It offers the styling, features and driving characteristics of an imported luxury car along with the competitive price and extensive aftersales service that only a domestic brand can offer. The Statesman will be available at selected GM Daewoo retailers across Korea as of the end of this week.
During a VIP dinner this evening to introduce the Statesman, GM Daewoo President and CEO Nick Reilly said, “The early response to the Statesman has been overwhelming. We are eager for more customers to get behind the wheel and experience first hand the excellent performance and comfort that are the hallmark of our newest product.”
Australian Federal Trade Minister Mark Vaile, who attended this evening’s event, said: “Korea has been an important customer of Australian auto components. The sale of whole vehicles is a significant step in expanding Australia's presence both in this market and in Asia more generally. The Statesman’s success in gaining access to the Korean market is good news for the industry’s future."
Today’s activities represent another milestone in the longstanding relationship between GM Daewoo and Holden. For the past 20 years, GM Holden has been the primary supplier of four-cylinder engines to GM Daewoo and the former Daewoo Motor Co.
In addition, the GM Daewoo Technical Center and GM Holden design organization have joined forces on several projects. Earlier this year, GM Daewoo announced that it would develop, produce and export vehicles from Korea to Australia for the Holden brand beginning in the second half of 2005.
GM Daewoo Auto & Technology, which is based in Incheon, Korea, was established in 2002. It has five manufacturing facilities in Korea as well as an assembly facility in Vietnam. GM Daewoo products also are assembled at GM facilities in China, Thailand, India, Colombia and Venezuela. In 2004, GM Daewoo sold more than 900,000 vehicles. Imported GM products from the Cadillac and Saab premium brands are sold in Korea through GM AutoWorld retailers.
