SEOUL--(Korea Newswire)--GM Korea Company rolled out its all-new dynamic global hatchback, the Chevrolet Cruze5, today in Seoul.

“Based on the popular Chevrolet Cruze sedan that has been praised for its great design, excellent ride and handling and benchmark safety, the all-new Cruze5 adds the sportiness and practicality of a hatchback to the nameplate,” said Mike Arcamone, President and CEO of GM Korea. “The key words for the new Cruze5 are ‘sexy & smart’ because it looks sexy and its practical hatchback style is a smart choice for car buyers. The new hatch will strengthen our Chevrolet product lineup and continue to draw people to the Chevrolet brand in Korea.”

The Cruze5 is the result of GM’s extensive global compact car development program based in Korea. Like the award-winning Cruze sedan, the hatch was developed to take on the best that the competition has to offer in terms of styling, powertrain performance, ride and handling, and safety. The Cruze sedan and hatchback models will be sold in more than 70 countries around the world.

Progressive Styling

With its attractive sweeping coupe roofline and short overhangs at both the front and rear, the new Cruze5 has the same dynamic stance as its sedan sibling and is instantly recognizable.

Wider and longer than any of its competitors, the Cruze5 has an upscale appearance. Its sporty and muscular stance with wheels of up to 17 inches is enabled by a segment-leading length of 4,510 mm and a width of 1,790 mm.

Bold headlamp housings that wrap around the front corners and sweep up into the fenders enhance its dynamic and sporty appeal. The sculpted hood complements the fender-swept headlamps and rising concave shoulder line that continues along the entire length of the car to the rear, adding to its strong overall character.

The sporty rear impression is highlighted by sculpted tailgates that are integrated into the rear combination lamps.

Spacious and Stylish Interior

Thanks to its wider track and longer wheelbase, the Cruze5’s spacious cabin comfortably accommodates five adults. The interior is as functional as it is stylish, with storage compartments in the center stack and doors.

The application of Chevrolet’s iconic dual cockpit design provides a distinct, confident and upscale impression of the interior. Rather than traditional wood or metallic film applications, grained surfaces, soft-touch materials and low-gloss trim panels are used. This is indicative of exceptional craftsmanship.

The rear seats fold flat for carrying larger items. Front semi bucket seats are standard and heated front seats are available.

The infotainment offerings include four- and six-speaker audio systems that can play music stored on an MP3, iPod or USB.

Advanced and Efficient Powertrains

The Cruze5 powertrain lineup offers outstanding efficiency and refinement that ensure a dynamic driving experience. A 1.8-liter ECOTEC and a 2.0-liter Euro V turbo-diesel engine are available. Both engines are mated with a standard six-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission.

The ECOTEC engine generates maximum power of 142 ps at 6,200 rpm and maximum torque of 17.8 kg.m at 3,800 rpm, while achieving fuel economy of 13.7 km/L. It adopts variable valve timing on both inlet and exhaust sides for optimal timing, resulting in more power as well as lower fuel consumption and emissions. The newly adopted variable intake manifold delivers improved launch and acceleration at high speeds.

The 2.0-liter turbo-diesel engine with common-rail fuel injection delivers outstanding power and fuel economy. It boasts maximum power of 163 ps at 3,800 rpm and maximum torque of 36.7 kg.m at 1,750-2,750 rpm, with fuel economy of 15.9 km/L. As a result of its low emissions, the diesel engine is environmentally friendly enough to meet the stringent Euro V emission standard.

Segment-Leading Ride and Handling

Like the Cruze sedan, the new hatch provides accomplished handling. At its heart is a body frame integral (BFI) structure that is among the stiffest in its segment. With the BFI system, the upper body structure and frame are engineered as a single unit, enabling better ride and handling feel along with a heightened sense of solidity and stability.

The Cruze5 is also equipped with an array of technically advanced chassis systems, including the Sensitive Electronic Stability Control system (SESC). This incorporates the Electronic Brake Distribution System (EBDS), Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) and Traction Control System (TCS), enabling it to sense slipping of the wheels and prevent the vehicle from sliding.

Other technical improvements to the chassis control system include Straight Line Stability (SLS), Cornering Brake Control (CBC) and Engine Drag Control (EDC), which ensure more stable driving and center-on feel. Large front and rear disc brakes, which provide improved braking and pedal feel, further enhance control of the upgraded chassis system.

Proven World-Class Safety

A host of body structural enhancements combined with a standard offering of extensive active and passive safety systems make the all-new Cruze5 one of the safest vehicles in the market.

A multi-crash load path structure on both the side and rear of the body provides maximum occupant protection in the event of an impact from virtually any direction. It will play a key role in securing an expected five-star NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) crash safety rating all over the world. Energy absorbing front and rear crumple zones are designed to deform as efficiently as possible in order to maintain the integrity of the passenger compartment, which is protected by a safety cage reinforced with tubular-section members that frame the door openings and support the roof.

Other safety features that maximize occupant protection include an air bag-sensing and diagnostic module that triggers air bags when detecting a high-speed impact, even from the side; and collapsible pedal assemblies that reduce the chance of injury to the driver’s lower body in the event of a collision.

Premium Comfort and Convenience

The new Cruze5 also has an array of premium comfort and convenience features, many of which one would expect in more expensive, higher-end vehicles.

The Cruze5 is the first hatchback to offer cruise control, which automatically maintains the speed and fuel efficiency of the vehicle. The Cruze5 also features a built-in navigation system, cruise control, electric tollgate collecting system, remote keyless entry, tire pressure monitoring system, push button ignition, graphic information display, and three-level heated driver and front passenger seats.

Pricing

The Chevrolet Cruze5 1.8 comes in two trim levels, priced from KRW 17 million for the LT to KRW 19 million for the LTZ. The Cruze5 diesel 2.0 is priced at KRW 20 million for the LTZ.
