SEOUL--(Korea Newswire)--Chevrolet today launched its first global midsize car, the all-new Malibu in Korea. GM Korea will start production this month at its Bupyeong manufacturing facility and begin sales in November.

“Korea is the first country to produce and sell the all-new Malibu,” said GM Korea President and CEO Mike Arcamone. “With expressive styling, a comfortable cabin, outstanding ride and handling, and top-notch safety, it will exceed the expectations of consumers.”

The Malibu nameplate may be new to Korea, but the Malibu is the industry’s longest-running midsize passenger car nameplate, spanning 35 years. More than 8.5 million Malibus have been produced in the United States since its debut in 1964. The product name also conveys the luxury character of the vehicle by creating a connection to the well-known enclave for wealthy celebrities in California.

The all-new eighth-generation Malibu carries on the award-winning heritage of the seventh generation, which has garnered more than 40 industry awards, including 2008 North American Car of the Year. It is the only midsize passenger car to be named a Consumers Digest Automotive “Best Buy” the past three years.

GM Korea engineers made sure that the new global vehicle would meet the demands of customers in the largest and most competitive segment in the Korean market.

Expressive and efficient exterior

The exterior design of the Malibu carries DNA from the Chevrolet Camaro and Corvette, bringing a sporty sensibility to the family sedan segment.

Other exterior design cues include Chevrolet’s dual-port grille, projector HID headlamps, large Chevrolet bow-tie badges in front and rear, and new Camaro-inspired dual-element taillamps. The look is complemented by a choice of large 17- and 18-inch wheels.

A wide stance, broad shoulders enabled by best-in-class width of 1,855 mm, and an integrated rear spoiler give the new Malibu an athletic posture and assertive appearance. The new Malibu is one of the most aerodynamically efficient cars.

Nine exterior colors and up to three interior color combinations are available, depending on the trim level.

Comfortable and refined interior

The new Malibu’s interior was designed to bring an element of sophistication to everyday driving. Its dual-cockpit design creates an inviting, spacious and comfortable environment with plenty of shoulder and hip room.

The new Malibu’s seats deliver best-in-class comfort. High-tech tools used include “Oscar,” a three-dimensional, mannequin-like tool that simulates a person. It provides a real-world ride evaluation. Another is a digital pressure-mapping system which measures a person’s back and posterior pressure distribution over the seat surface and creates a map with 4,600 data points.

Among the refinements inside the new Malibu are metallic or chrome accents located around the shifter, surrounding the center stack and instrument cluster, and on doors and the steering wheel. Soft ambient lighting complements the accents and ensures even, consistent illumination along the instrument panel and in storage pockets. Ocean blue lighting, soft-touch and textured surfaces, and strategic applications of noise-deadening materials add to the new Malibu’s interior refinement.

In fact, the new Malibu offers the quietest ride in its segment through the use of components that prevent tire, wind and road noise from entering the cabin. Components such as noise-reducing outside rearview mirrors, acoustic laminated front glass and noise-absorption pads are strategically placed to make the cabin quiet and improve the overall quality inside.

Also inside the new Malibu are a number of storage areas, including a radio face that moves up and down to reveal a six-inch-deep storage area, aptly called the “Secret Cube,” behind the seven-inch touch-screen color radio display.

Outstanding ride and handling

The new Malibu is powered by 2.0- and 2.4-liter DOHC gasoline engines, which are matched with an electronically controlled six-speed automatic transmission.

The new Malibu delivers precise ride and handling on par with higher-end sports sedans. Benefiting from continuous refinement of an award-winning global architecture, GM engineers tested, tuned and calibrated the new Malibu on rural roads, highways and freeways, and at GM validation facilities around the world.

The new Malibu’s solid body structure allows for precise tuning and dynamic vehicle control. Other systems contributing to its ride performance are a premium steering gear for smooth, precise responsiveness and on-center feel, and a MacPherson strut front and four-link rear suspension.

Chassis control technologies include four-corner electronic stability control that incorporates full-function traction control, electronic brake force distribution, brake assist, and corner brake control.

Rock-solid safety performance

When it comes to safety features, the new Malibu is one of the best-equipped vehicles in the midsize segment. On top of its sturdy body structure, 65 percent of which is made of high-strength steel, the new Malibu comes with an array of standard active and passive safety features.

A total of six air bags – dual-stage driver and front passenger air bags, driver and front side-impact air bags, and roof rail air bags – and dual pretensioners come standard. Rear park assist and a rearview camera are also available.

Premium comfort and convenience

The new Malibu has an array of premium comfort and convenience features that help ensure an enjoyable and safe driving experience.

The new Malibu is the first vehicle in its segment in Korea with 12-way power adjustable driver’s and front passenger’s seats and a lane departure warning system which sounds a warning alarm if the driver veers out of a lane. A 60:40 folding rear seat is also offered as standard.

Its electric park brake requires the mere push of a button to brake for parking. A full range of the latest infotainment options is also offered in the new Malibu, including the next generation infotainment system with a seven-inch LCD touch screen, and an available navigation system.

Pricing
The new Malibu 2.0 comes in three trim levels, which are priced from KRW 21.8 million for the LS to KRW 28.2 million for the LTZ. The new Malibu 2.4 is priced at KRW 31.7 million for the LTZ.
