SEOUL--(Korea Newswire)--There are more and more foreign visitors coming to Korea due to the overseas popularity of Korean drama, K-pop and Korean idol stars. In particular, Japanese tourists make up about 40% of the total number of foreign visitors to Korea and many of them have already visited Korea or intend to visit Korea again. With the blooming economic growth and increased income levels, Chinese tourists, the so-called big players, consider Korea to be a desirable tourist spot. Foreign tourists that visit Korea have many different purposes for their visit such as playing golf, visiting the casinos, amusement parks, enjoying food and shopping, etc.

However, one of the most common items on the wish list of foreign tourists is experiencing traditional Korean cultural attractions. So a lot of tourists visit Gyeongbokgung, Biwon, Korean-style houses and Korean restaurants (enjoying dishes such as kimchi and bulgogi) that are found in Insa-dong, filming locations for famous Korean dramas, fan meetings for hallyu stars and attend concerts of k-pop artists. Thus, there are certain Korean tourist attractions that are in high demand, but at the same time, the number of these attractions are very limited. In particular, Japanese tourists that frequently visit Korea often complain that there are not enough tourist attractions and they have no other places to visit.

Some items which are representative of Korea are the hanbok(Traditional Korean Dress), Korean food and Korean-style houses (hanok).

Hanbok designer Ahn has been designing premier hanbok dresses as it has been passed down as a family business for three generations and the rental prices for her hanbok dresses are sometimes more expensive than purchasing a customized hanbok. Normal rental prices for an Ahn's Hanbok is fairly expensive (ranging from 150,000 Korean Won to 330,000 Korean Won) (visit the homepage at www.hanbokrent.kr). Recently, many people have been seeking to rent luxury hanbok designs rather than purchasing a custom fitted hanbok dress for traditionally celebrated events such as 70th birthdays, first birthdays, engagement dinners as well as weddings (hanbok for the groom, bride and the mothers of both sides).

Deputy Section Chief Row-Un Jeong at Ahn Co., Ltd. emphasized that accessibility of rental hanboks by stating that “Ahn's Hanbok is a franchise chain that has over 17 stores in Seoul and its outskirts which makes it easy for customers to visit.”

In the past few years, the demand for taking studio pictures while wearing a hanbok dress among Japanese, American and Chinese tourists has increased significantly. For example, many foreign tourists are visiting certain Ahn‘s Hanbok stores (Cheongdam Gangnam Main Store, Lotte World Jamsil Store) in Seoul based upon word-of-mouth. As a result of the increased demand to experience the Korean hanbok culture, Ahn’s Hanbok has launched a tourist package where tourists can take pictures dressed up in a luxurious and beautiful hanbok.

Department head Ms. Yun Jeong Choi of Ahn‘s Hanbok stated that “Korean historical dramas such as ‘Daejanggeum’, ‘Gung‘, ‘Isan’, ‘Dongi‘, ‘Haereul Pumeun Dal’ are very popular overseas. Foreign tourists themselves can become a hero or heroine of a Korean historical drama and also get a firsthand taste of the most recent 2012/2013 collection of Ahn Geun Bae Hanboks through the Korean traditional clothing hanbok culture experience package.”

There is an old saying: “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” We hope that tourists can take away from their visit to Korea with a feeling of complete accomplishment of experiencing the real authentic traditional hanbok. Furthermore, as it is said “when wearing a hanbok, it will bring good fortune and it is a sacred clothing that wards off any misfortune” (see Chosun Ilbo, page A37, May 13, 2010), its underlying meaning is much more special.
