"Gentra, with its blend of classical and modern lines creates a ‘class all of its own’,” said Nick Reilly, President and CEO of GM Daewoo. “Gentra bridges the traditional small and compact car segments. It maintains the affordable price and fuel economy of a small car, but adds the modern and sporty design, impressive styling, generous space and advanced features normally found in more prestigious model. This makes the Gentra the smart choice for those who want both value and class in a single package.”
Stylish, Progressive Exterior
A trendy, wide chrome front grille is representative of the Gentra’s premium styling. Sharp hood character lines that extend to the front bumper, large headlamps with multi-focus reflector lenses and round fog lamps rimmed in the Gentra’s body color complete the striking front view.
Edged side character lines and voluminous wheel arches along with optional sporty 15-inch alloy wheels give the Gentra a strong, muscular profile. Among the other striking features are pull-out type chrome door handles, which are not available on other cars in its class, and two-tone colored outside rearview mirrors. Cylinder-type rear lamps, a long chrome trunk handle and an optional two-tower type spoiler highlight the Gentra’s rear view.
The Gentra has a wheelbase of 2,480 millimeters and a height of 1,505 millimeters. Its overall length of 4,310 millimeters and width of 1,710 millimeters are the greatest in its class. These large exterior dimensions provide the basis for a very generous interior.
Attractive, Spacious Interior
Inside, the Gentra clearly breaks away from the typical small car. The use of new materials, soft dual tones and harmoniously integrated contrasting moldings give the interior a luxurious and sophisticated feel.
The Gentra’s four-circle meter cluster offers outstanding visibility and an elegant look. The door design features wood grain trim and convenient chrome gooseneck door handles. A newly designed full-face audio system perfectly blends in with the center fascia, adding a refined touch to the interior.
The Gentra is roomy, offering headroom, shoulder room and hip room that are among the best in its class. A high seating position provides passengers a better view of the road ahead. Convenient split-folding rear seats increase the amount of space for carrying cargo and enable longer objects to be transported easily. The trunk provides a generous capacity of up to 400 liters.
Smart Performance
The 1.5-liter E-TEC II engine in the Gentra is tuned to generate maximum torque of 13.4 kg·m at a moderate 3,000 rpm. Combined with fuel efficiency of 15.2 km/ℓ (M/T) and 13.3 km/ℓ (A/T), the Gentra is very economical and ideal for city driving.
A 32-bit engine control module (ECM) and efficient, lightweight automatic transmission with a fuzzy control system contribute further to the powertrain’s optimal performance. The extensive application of measures to reduce noise, vibration and harshness makes driving the Gentra at high speeds a pleasure.
Enhanced Safety
The Gentra offers strong passenger protection. Over 40 percent of its passenger cell is made of high-strength steel. For enhanced side protection, the B-pillar is made of three steel plates of different thicknesses. The plates are welded together so that in the event of a side impact, the B-pillar moves like a pendulum rather than being folded and protruding into the passenger compartment. Known as Tailor-Welded Blanking, or the pendulum method, this is normally used in larger, upper-segment vehicles.
Providing additional safety are dual front air bags, side air bags, seat-belt pretensioners with load limiters and knee bolsters. Four-channel, four-sensor anti-lock brakes integrated with electronic brake force distribution (EBD) distributes braking force electronically to each wheel in accordance with the number of passengers, weight load and road conditions.
Upgraded Convenience
The Gentra has a number of amenities that are generally found in higher-end, higher-priced vehicles. Depending on trim level, these include fully automatic air conditioning, tilt steering, a driver’s seat armrest, intermittent wipers, seat-belt height adjusters, and heated front and rear seats. In addition, power door locks and power windows in both the front and rear feature a one-touch safety function that prevents a hand from getting stuck between the door and window.
Other premium features are remote-controlled central door locking and trunk opening with an anti-theft function; a trip computer displaying all information on driving including the distance to go on remaining fuel, outside temperature, average speed and driving time; a navigation system with a six-step tilt LCD screen; an audio control and hands-free cell phone control on the steering wheel; electrically folding and heated outside rearview mirrors; and an automatic, tilt sunroof.
Despite the number of premium features, the Gentra’s price tag is very attractive. The Gentra with a 1.5-liter engine and manual transmission comes in three trim levels. The SX retails for KRW 8.54 million, the CDX for KRW 8.84 million and the Diamond for KRW 10.22 million.
