Gangwon people voice sky-high support for 2014 PyeongChang Olympics, survey finds

PyeongChang--(뉴스와이어)--The residents of Gangwon Province overwhelmingly want their community of PyeongChang to host the 2014 Winter Olympics.

The result of a survey taken earlier this month found that 93.9 percent wanted their provincial city of PyeongChang to win its Olympic bid. The International Olympic Committee will select a winner in July 2007, in Guatemala City.

In a survey of 1,800 residents taken this month, 1,597 persons, or 93.9 percent, endorsed having a Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. Just 25 persons, or 1.5 percent, did not favor of a local Olympics, while 68 people or 4 percent elected not to voice their opinion.

When asked about the positive effects of hosting the Olympics, 31.6 percent of respondents, or 537 people, believed it would help to improve the regional economy by strengthening the province’s tourism industry. Another 26.4 percent or 448 persons said the Winter Olympics would spur on more development in the mountain province, while 431 persons or 25.4 percent said that it would raise recognition of Gangwon Province around the world. Finally, 165 respondents or 9.7 percent said transportation would get better as a result of hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics.

The phone survey was conducted on October 10 and 11 by the regional daily newspaper Gangwon Ilbo in cooperation with Gangwon Research, in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Gangwon Ilbo.

While the latest survey provides undeniable evidence of Gangwon Province’s strong backing for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, it has also reinforced the conviction and passion of the bid committee, which is working around the clock to bring the world’s premier athletic festival to PyeongChang.

In a previous survey taken during the bid for the 2010 Winter Olympics, in which PyeongChang narrowly lost to Vancouver, Canada, it was revealed that nationwide support was high as well: 86.4% of all Koreans were eager for their country to host the Winter Olympics.
