PyeongChang adds multifunctional card to its bidding arsenal
The card is named for the 100,000-strong “Dongsamo” group, a
contraction for “People Who Love Winter Sports.” Bid officials expect the card to expand the already widespread public support for the PyeongChang Winter Olympic bid, from big cities to farm towns and even the most remote isle.
Nonghyup, one of Korea’s largest banks, began offering the
“Dongsamo” card on Monday at its 918 branches nationwide. All cardholders will be registered as official Dongsamo members, and receive discounts at retail outlets, booksellers, ski resorts, lodging and more. At the same time, the bank, an official sponsor of the PyeongChang Olympic bid, will donate from 0.1% to 0.2% of each purchase to the 2014 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games Bid Committee’s campaign fund.
In a similar way, the bank will donate 0.1% of the money deposited in its new Dongsamo savings account to the bid committee. This promotion will continue until 1 trillion won (about US$960 million) is raised, bolstering what is already regarded as firm support from the government.
Dongsamo started out as a band of netizen supporters in November 2003, during the Gangwon Province city’s bid for the 2010 Winter Olympics, but has now grown into a nationwide campaign. People of all ages and backgrounds are now volunteering for the bid effort in their local communities toward different kinds of promotional activities.
